About this course
Choosing between science and engineering often gets framed as a choice you have to get exactly right, with college applications, scholarship deadlines and family expectations all pressing at once. This course takes the pressure down by helping students understand the real difference between the two: science is driven mainly by discovery, engineering mainly by application, and plenty of careers combine both.
Over five days, students explore:
- what scientists and engineers actually do day to day, and the hybrid fields in between;
- the financial picture, including education paths, costs and earnings;
- their own thinking style, and whether it leans toward discovery, application or both;
- how to research options for themselves instead of relying on stereotypes;
- how to talk about the decision with family;
- how to decide with incomplete information, and adjust later.
By the end, students will have:
- a clearer sense of whether they think more like a scientist, an engineer or both;
- a realistic picture of what each path involves, from study to work;
- a simple framework for making the decision now and revisiting it later;
- scripts for conversations with family about their choice;
- a concrete next step, without needing everything figured out first.
How the course works
The course has five video modules, one for each day, with lessons of about 10 to 14 minutes each. Every lesson ends with a reflection exercise, and each day includes a short practical exercise, so the course is quick to watch but works best when the exercises are actually done. Downloadable conversation scripts and templates are included. There are no prerequisites.
